This photo of Dewey shows how far shelter dogs can go when they are given the chance. Sure, he's a party animal 😄 — but he's also been a valued member of his adoptive family for eight years.
Adopted in September 2011, Dewey is celebrated each year with a birthday party attended by the neighborhood children.
Dewey turned 8 on May 31, and his party was June 1 this year.
His humans tell us: "Dewey is so loved. I'm constantly hearing my kids say, 'You are so cute,' cuddling with him, and playing with him. He gives us hugs on demand.
"He will only sleep between my husband and I, mostly burrowed under the covers between us. You may remember that he injured his leg not after joining our family. Back then, I had him sleep with me to avoid re-injury, and he's such a creature of habit, he has never left.
"Now that I have an 18-year-old son and 16-year-old and 12-year-old daughters, Dewey enjoys going back to bed with my kids when they sleep in.
"He also likes to go to the dog park in Xenia. I take him on walks daily and my husband does too with the kids pitching in too. My husband sometimes likes to give him long walks, and there's been times I've had to go pick them up because Dewey is pooped and has taken refuge under a shady tree at the side of the road, refusing to move.
"Currently my husband is sitting in his recliner watching TV. Every time that happens, Dewey must join him, lying across his legs. He has been the greatest addition to our family. I call him my 4-legged 4th child."
